Ever since I started doing mediation, I have become aware that many people seem to get caught up in elaborate ideas of what they think mediation is. Many people I have spoken with seem to think that you have must have to twist your body around like a pretzel so that you ankles are behind your ears!! Another idea is that you may need to go live in a cave and fast for days on end. This is far from true. In basic terms, meditation is simply, sitting or lying, relaxing and experiencing the moment.
Anyone can meditate, and it really does not entail extreme concentration. Another suprise to you may be the fact, that you do not have to be able to completely clear your mind and think of nothing. The fact is that most mediations actually do give you a place, situation or location of focus. When you do a guided mediation, your mind is not blank is it?
How often do we take time out from our hectic schedules to wander outside and just take in the beauty around us? To just sit down and appreciate the sounds of the birds chirping, and the rustle of the leaves as a tree slowly sways to and fro in the wind. What about just to stand and gaze in awe at the magnificence of a sunset? I do not mean a quick look at the colour of the sky. I mean to really take in this astonishing "act of God"(Goddess if you will). Well if you have taken the time to do this, I would like to tell you that you have already meditated.
There are so many benefits to meditation such as improving your health due to lowering blood pressure and reducing stress levels. Meditation sharpens the mind which aids in centering, focus and concentration. It can amend moods, by levelling out the highs and the lows. It enables us to be more concious of our enviroment and surroundings which assists us in the here and now, which in turn we can make the most of our lives. Meditation helps considerably to hush the continual chatter of our minds.
